Husam Chaya

Sculpts using the traditional ways

Marble sculpture is the art of creating three-dimensional forms from marble. Sculpture is among the oldest of the arts. Even before painting cave walls, early humans fashioned shapes from stone. Husam Chaya started his career as a marble sculptor. He became famous in Lebanon for his detailed fine surfaces, and the sensation of his lines.

The process

From design into a sculpture

Husam starts his marble sculptures by creating a small model. Usually this model is made of clay. The process of transforming a small model in a monumental sculpture involves a mathematical process. Here we see Husam cutting one side of the sculpture using an electrical grinder with a diamond blade made specifically to cut marble. We also see the traces of line that Husam draw on the stone as a reference for the cuts.

Moving the sculpture

Cranes

Here we see how sensitive and dangerous the process of moving a sculpture. It require a team of professional and special equipment to protect the surfaces, and a crane to lift it.

David

Future sculptor

While Husam was sculpting, David used to visit him regularly with his parents and checks the progress of the sculptures. He was in love with sculpting, and he wanted to become a artist when he grows up.

As for the marble scuplture on the right, it was made from the same marble of the sculpture that was made for Abu Dhabi. It is 35cm of height. Husam is exhibiting this sculpture for sale at Saatchi Art Online. Or you can contact the artist directly. (1 unique piece only)
